An atrial septal defect is a hole in the wall between the two upper chambers of the heart. Many go undetected into adulthood as they cause no obvious symptoms. An MRI may show a defect in the wall between the upper chambers consistent with this condition. Finding an atrial septal defect early allows for monitoring and may allow for closure before it causes pulmonary hypertension or arrhythmia.
