A branchial cleft cyst is a congenital, meaning present from birth, cyst that develops from remnants of structures that form during early development in the womb. It appears as a lump in the neck and may go unnoticed for years. An MRI may show a fluid-filled structure in the neck consistent with a branchial cleft cyst. Finding a branchial cleft cyst may allow for surgical removal before it becomes infected or enlarges.
