Some congenital, meaning present from birth, heart defects are mild enough to go undetected until adulthood. They may cause no symptoms for decades before being found unexpectedly. An MRI may show structural changes in the heart consistent with a congenital variation. Finding an undiagnosed congenital heart defect in adulthood allows for monitoring and treatment planning before complications develop.
