Encephalitis is an inflammation of the brain, most commonly caused by a viral infection. It can develop rapidly but slower-developing forms can progress over weeks. An MRI may show changes in brain tissue consistent with inflammation. Identifying encephalitis early may allow for prompt treatment to reduce brain inflammation before permanent damage occurs.
