A hiatal hernia happens when part of the stomach pushes up through the diaphragm, the muscle that separates the chest and abdomen, into the chest. It is a common finding and most people have no symptoms. An MRI may show changes in the position of the stomach relative to the diaphragm. Identifying a hiatal hernia may help explain symptoms like reflux and allow for dietary and lifestyle management.
