Tumours can develop along the intercostal nerves running between the ribs. They are often noncancerous schwannomas or neurofibromas. An MRI may show a soft tissue mass along an intercostal nerve consistent with a tumour. Finding an intercostal nerve tumour early allows for monitoring and surgical removal if it grows or causes symptoms.
