A lung abscess is a localised collection of pus within the lung tissue, usually caused by infection. It can develop gradually and may not cause obvious symptoms initially. An MRI may show a cavity or mass in the lung consistent with an abscess. Finding a lung abscess early may allow for antibiotic treatment before it grows or causes serious complications. CT is generally preferred for lung abscess assessment, however MRI can characterise the surrounding soft tissue.
