Lymphangitis carcinomatosa

Chest
Whole Body Systems

Lymphangitis carcinomatosa is the spread of cancer through the lymphatic vessels of the lungs. It is typically associated with advanced cancer and almost always causes symptoms such as significant breathlessness. It would be a very rare finding in a truly asymptomatic person. An MRI may show changes in lung tissue that could be consistent with lymphatic involvement, though CT is the preferred tool for this pattern of spread. Identifying lymphangitis carcinomatosa allows for staging and treatment planning. CT is the preferred modality for detecting lymphangitis carcinomatosa. MRI may show associated changes but has limited sensitivity for fine lung parenchymal detail.
