A mediastinal abscess is a collection of infected material in the central chest. It can develop from spread of infection from nearby structures. An MRI may show a fluid collection in the central chest consistent with an abscess. Finding a mediastinal abscess early may allow for urgent treatment before it spreads to surrounding structures.
