The mediastinum is the space in the centre of the chest between the lungs. Masses can develop here from a variety of tissues including lymph nodes, the thymus, and other structures. An MRI may show changes in this region consistent with a mass. Identifying a mediastinal mass early allows for further investigation to determine its nature before it grows or affects surrounding structures.
