Myocarditis is inflammation of the heart muscle, often triggered by a viral infection. It can develop without obvious symptoms and may affect heart function. An MRI may show changes in heart muscle signal consistent with inflammation. Identifying myocarditis early allows for rest and treatment that may help reduce the risk of lasting heart muscle damage.
