Tumours of the oesophagus can develop in the lining or lining of the food pipe. They may cause no symptoms until they are advanced. An MRI may show changes in the oesophageal lining consistent with a mass. Finding an oesophageal tumour early may allow for treatment before it spreads to surrounding structures or lymph nodes. Endoscopy is the primary diagnostic tool for oesophageal tumours, however MRI contributes to staging and assessment of local invasion.
