Oesophageal varices

Chest
Abdomen & Pelvis

Oesophageal varices are enlarged veins in the lining of the food pipe, most commonly linked to liver disease and increased pressure in the portal vein system. They can develop without symptoms but carry a risk of serious bleeding. An MRI may show changes in the oesophageal venous structures consistent with varices. Finding oesophageal varices early allows for monitoring and treatment that may help reduce the risk of life-threatening bleeding.
