A patent foramen ovale is a small opening between the upper chambers of the heart that failed to close after birth. It is present in around one in four adults and is linked to certain types of stroke. An MRI may show changes in the wall between the upper heart chambers consistent with a patent foramen ovale. Finding a patent foramen ovale may provide an explanation for unexplained stroke and allow for closure that could help reduce the risk of future events.
