Pericardial effusion is a build-up of fluid in the sac surrounding the heart. Small amounts can go unnoticed, while larger collections may affect how the heart works. An MRI may show changes in the space around the heart consistent with fluid build-up. Identifying fluid around the heart early allows for investigation into the cause and monitoring before it affects cardiac function.
