Pleural plaques are areas of thickening or scarring on the lining of the lungs, often linked to past asbestos exposure. They are usually noncancerous but can indicate a history of exposure. An MRI may show changes in the pleural lining consistent with plaques. Identifying pleural plaques prompts monitoring for other asbestos-related conditions that may develop over time. CT is generally more sensitive for pleural plaque detection, however MRI may identify pleural changes.
