Progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy

Head & Neck

Progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy is a serious brain infection caused by the JC virus that destroys myelin, the protective coating around nerve fibres. It happens in people with weakened immune systems and can cause worsening neurological decline. An MRI may show characteristic white matter changes consistent with this condition. Finding changes associated with progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy early may allow for urgent management to help slow neurological deterioration.
