Retropharyngeal abscess

Head & Neck

A retropharyngeal abscess is a collection of infected material in the space behind the pharynx, the back of the throat. It can develop from throat infections and may cause difficulty swallowing or breathing. An MRI may show a fluid collection in the retropharyngeal space consistent with an abscess. Finding a retropharyngeal abscess early may allow for prompt drainage and antibiotic treatment before airway compromise occurs.
