Superficial siderosis is the build-up of iron-containing pigment on the surface of the brain and spinal cord from repeated small bleeds. It can cause progressive hearing loss, coordination problems, and cognitive decline. An MRI may show characteristic dark signal along the brain surface consistent with siderosis. Finding superficial siderosis early prompts investigation into the source of bleeding and allows for management that may help prevent further neurological deterioration.
