Superior vena cava syndrome

Chest
Blood Vessels & Circulation

Superior vena cava syndrome happens when the large vein returning blood from the upper body to the heart becomes blocked. It is often caused by a nearby tumour or enlarged lymph nodes. An MRI may show changes in this vein and surrounding structures consistent with a blockage. Finding superior vena cava obstruction early may allow for treatment of the underlying cause before symptoms become severe.
