Thymoma

Chest

A thymoma is a tumour that develops in the thymus gland, a small organ that sits in the upper chest behind the breastbone. Most grow slowly and many are found unexpectedly. An MRI may show changes in the thymus region consistent with a thymoma. Finding a thymoma early may allow for surgical removal before it grows or spreads to nearby structures. MRI provides excellent soft tissue characterisation of mediastinal masses including thymoma, and is used alongside CT for staging.
