A thyroglossal duct cyst is a congenital, meaning present from birth, cyst that forms along the path the thyroid gland travelled during development. It appears as a midline neck mass and may go unnoticed into adulthood. An MRI may show a midline fluid-filled structure in the neck consistent with a thyroglossal duct cyst. Finding a thyroglossal duct cyst may allow for surgical removal before it becomes infected.
