Thyroid cancer develops in the cells of the thyroid gland and is often slow growing. Many cases are found unexpectedly on imaging of the neck. An MRI may show changes in the thyroid consistent with a suspicious mass. Finding thyroid cancer early, when it is confined to the gland, may give excellent treatment outcomes. Ultrasound is the primary tool for thyroid cancer assessment, however MRI is valuable for assessing local invasion and lymph node involvement.
