An arterial dissection happens when a tear develops in the inner lining of an artery, allowing blood to flow between its layers. It can affect arteries in the neck or abdomen and may develop with minimal symptoms. An MRI may show changes in the artery lining consistent with a dissection. Identifying an arterial dissection early may allow for treatment to help prevent stroke or other serious vascular complications.
