Avascular necrosis

Musculoskeletal & Spine

Avascular necrosis happens when bone tissue breaks down due to a disruption in its blood supply. It most commonly affects the hip and can progress to joint collapse if not detected. An MRI may show changes in bone signal consistent with reduced blood supply. Finding avascular necrosis early, when bone changes are limited, may allow for treatment before joint collapse occurs.
