Budd-Chiari syndrome

Blood Vessels & Circulation
Abdomen & Pelvis

Budd-Chiari syndrome is caused by a blockage of the veins that drain blood away from the liver. It can develop gradually and cause liver damage and increased pressure in the portal vein system. An MRI may show changes in the liver's veins and liver tissue consistent with venous outflow obstruction. Finding Budd-Chiari syndrome early may allow for treatment to restore venous drainage before irreversible liver damage occurs.
