A carotid artery aneurysm is a bulge in the lining of one of the carotid arteries in the neck. It can develop without obvious symptoms and carries a risk of rupture or clot formation. An MRI may show a focused widening of the carotid artery consistent with an aneurysm. Finding a carotid artery aneurysm early allows for monitoring and may allow for treatment before it ruptures or causes a stroke.
