Carotid artery disease happens when the arteries that supply blood to the brain become narrowed or blocked by plaque build-up. It often develops without symptoms and is a significant risk factor for stroke. An MRI may show changes in the carotid arteries consistent with narrowing or plaque. Identifying carotid artery disease early allows for risk factor management and intervention that may help reduce the risk of a stroke.
