Carotid artery dissection

Blood Vessels & Circulation
Head & Neck

A carotid artery dissection is a tear in the lining of the carotid artery that can cause a stroke or a brief stroke-like episode. It can happen spontaneously or after minor trauma to the neck. An MRI may show changes in the carotid artery lining consistent with a dissection. Identifying a carotid artery dissection early may allow for prompt treatment to help prevent stroke.
