Cavernous sinus thrombosis is a blood clot in the cavernous sinus, a cavity at the base of the brain that drains blood from the face and brain. It can develop from infections in the head and face. An MRI may show changes in this region consistent with a clot. Finding cavernous sinus thrombosis early may allow for prompt anticoagulation and antibiotic treatment before serious neurological complications develop.
