Chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension develops when blood clots in the lungs do not fully resolve, causing the pressure in the pulmonary arteries to gradually rise. It can develop silently over months to years. An MRI may show changes in pulmonary vessels and the right side of the heart consistent with elevated pressure. Finding this condition early may allow for surgical or catheter-based treatment before right heart failure develops.
