Deep vein thrombosis is a blood clot that forms in a deep vein, usually in the legs or pelvis. It can develop without obvious symptoms and carries a risk of the clot travelling to the lungs. An MRI may show changes in venous structures consistent with a clot. Finding a deep vein thrombosis early may allow for treatment before it causes a pulmonary embolism. Ultrasound is generally the preferred first-line tool for DVT assessment, however MRI can identify clots in deeper pelvic veins.
