Giant cell arteritis is an inflammatory condition affecting large and medium-sized arteries, particularly those in the head and neck. It can cause headaches and vision loss if not treated. An MRI may show changes in the temporal and other cranial arteries consistent with blood vessel inflammation. Finding giant cell arteritis early may allow for corticosteroid treatment before it causes vision loss or stroke.
