Nutcracker syndrome happens when the left renal vein gets pinched between two major blood vessels, the aorta and the superior mesenteric artery. It can cause pelvic pain and blood in the urine. An MRI may show compression of this vein consistent with this condition. Finding nutcracker syndrome early may provide an explanation for symptoms and allow for treatment planning.
