Penetrating aortic ulcer

Blood Vessels & Circulation
Chest

A penetrating aortic ulcer is a plaque build-up that erodes through the inner layer of the aorta. It can progress to dissection or rupture. An MRI may show a localised outpouching in the aortic lining consistent with a penetrating ulcer. Finding a penetrating aortic ulcer early allows for monitoring and treatment that may help prevent life-threatening complications.
