Portal hypertension is a build-up of pressure in the portal vein, the blood vessel that carries blood from the digestive organs to the liver. It is often linked to liver disease and can develop gradually. An MRI may show changes in the blood vessels of the portal system consistent with elevated pressure. Identifying portal hypertension early allows for management of the underlying cause that may help prevent serious complications from developing.
