Superior mesenteric artery syndrome happens when the first part of the small intestine, the duodenum, gets compressed between two major blood vessels. It can cause intermittent blockage of the bowel. An MRI may show narrowing of the duodenum and the surrounding blood vessel anatomy consistent with this condition. Finding superior mesenteric artery syndrome early may provide an explanation for symptoms and allow for dietary or surgical management.
