Venous insufficiency happens when the veins in the legs have difficulty returning blood to the heart. It can cause swelling, discomfort, and skin changes over time. An MRI may show changes in venous structures consistent with impaired blood flow. Identifying venous insufficiency early may allow for management to help prevent progression to more serious venous disease. Ultrasound is generally the preferred tool for venous insufficiency assessment, however MRI can show relevant vascular changes.
