Cervical myelopathy happens when the spinal cord in the neck becomes compressed, affecting signals between the brain and the rest of the body. It can develop gradually and cause subtle changes in strength, balance, and coordination. An MRI may show changes in the cervical spinal cord consistent with compression. Finding cervical myelopathy early may allow for surgical decompression before permanent spinal cord damage occurs.
