A lipoma is a noncancerous growth made up of fatty tissue that can develop in muscles or soft tissue throughout the body. Most are harmless and found unexpectedly. An MRI may show a fatty mass in soft tissue consistent with a lipoma. Finding a lipoma allows for confirmation of its noncancerous nature and monitoring if it grows near important structures.
