The medial collateral ligament stabilises the inner side of the knee. Tears can happen from injury and may heal incompletely, leading to ongoing instability. An MRI may show changes in the medial collateral ligament consistent with a tear. Finding a medial collateral ligament tear allows for appropriate rehabilitation that may help restore knee stability.
