Sacral insufficiency fracture

Musculoskeletal & Spine

A sacral insufficiency fracture is a stress fracture of the sacrum, the bone at the base of the spine, that happens when normal physical stress is applied to weakened bone. It can develop without obvious trauma and cause significant pain. An MRI may show changes in the sacrum consistent with a stress fracture. Finding a sacral insufficiency fracture early may allow for rest and management before it progresses or causes complications.
