Sacroiliac joint dysfunction

Musculoskeletal & Spine

Sacroiliac joint dysfunction happens when the joints connecting the base of the spine to the pelvis move too much or too little, causing lower back and hip pain. Unlike sacroiliitis, it is a mechanical issue rather than an inflammatory one, and can be present for years before being identified. An MRI may show changes in the sacroiliac joints consistent with mechanical stress or degeneration. Identifying sacroiliac joint dysfunction early may allow for targeted physiotherapy and management that could help reduce pain and prevent the condition from worsening.
