Sciatic nerve entrapment happens when the sciatic nerve is compressed or irritated outside the spine, most commonly by the piriformis muscle in the buttock. It can cause buttock and leg pain similar to disc-related sciatica. An MRI may show changes near the sciatic nerve consistent with entrapment. Identifying sciatic nerve entrapment early may allow for targeted treatment to relieve compression before chronic nerve damage develops.
