A spinal dural arteriovenous malformation is an abnormal connection between arteries and veins in the covering of the spinal cord. It can cause worsening neurological symptoms by impairing blood drainage from the cord. An MRI may show changes in spinal cord signal consistent with venous congestion. Finding a spinal dural AVM early may allow for treatment before irreversible spinal cord damage occurs.
