A spinal epidural abscess is a collection of infected material in the space surrounding the spinal cord. It is uncommon but can cause serious neurological complications if not identified. An MRI may show changes in the epidural space consistent with an abscess. Finding a spinal epidural abscess early may allow for urgent treatment before it causes permanent spinal cord damage.
