A spinal lipoma is a noncancerous fatty growth that can develop inside the spinal canal or attached to the spinal cord. Most are found unexpectedly but some can cause neurological symptoms. An MRI may show a fatty mass within or near the spinal canal consistent with a lipoma. Finding a spinal lipoma allows for monitoring and surgical planning if it causes or threatens neurological symptoms.
