A spinal schwannoma is a noncancerous tumour that develops from the nerve sheath cells surrounding spinal nerve roots. Most grow slowly and can cause worsening symptoms. An MRI may show a well-defined mass associated with a spinal nerve root consistent with a schwannoma. Finding a spinal schwannoma early may allow for surgical removal before it puts pressure on the spinal cord or nerve roots.
