A stress fracture is a small crack in a bone caused by repetitive force or overuse. They can develop gradually and may not be obvious without imaging. An MRI may show changes in bone structure consistent with a stress fracture. Finding a stress fracture early may allow for rest and management before it progresses to a complete fracture.
