A synovial cyst is a fluid-filled sac that develops from the lining of a joint, most commonly in the spine. They are usually noncancerous and often found unexpectedly. An MRI may show a fluid-filled structure near a spinal joint as an incidental finding. Finding a synovial cyst allows for monitoring and treatment if it grows large enough to press on nearby nerves.
